IV Sedation FAQs

What Procedures?

Many people with extreme dental anxiety avoid going to the dentist even when they know their oral health is declining. This can be a problem since tooth decay, chronic tooth grinding, and other issues can progress and, if left untreated, may develop into more serious conditions. Now, thanks to sedation dentistry, these patients can schedule needed dental treatment without extreme anxiety. Sedation dentistry can be used for a variety of procedures, including dental implant surgery, root canal therapy, oral surgery, tooth extractions, and other general and restorative dentistry treatments.

24-Hour Recovery?

Each patient’s recovery period is different. Some patients may feel the effects wear off sooner or later than others. Patients are advised to not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours to ensure the effects have worn off completely. Patients should have someone drive them home after their procedure.

Will I Be Asleep?

Although IV sedation is commonly referred to as sleep sedation, it does not put patients to sleep. Patients will be conscious, but describe the experience as deep relaxation. Patients still have the ability to respond to the dentist’s requests during the procedure.

Memory Loss?

Most dentists use IV sedation for highly anxious patients, which is why patients experience partial or full memory loss during IV sedation. However, patients will only lose memory of the dental experience.
